An AI voice agent that answers in Catalan
Yes, an AI can answer the phone in Catalan, but it does not come out of the box. On AI voice platforms Catalan is not a checkbox: it has to be the agent's primary language, and the voice has to be designed, because commercial voice libraries contain no Catalan voice at all. This page explains what that involves, because it is the difference between an AI that speaks Catalan and one that reads Catalan with a Spanish accent.
Catalan is not an "additional" language
Voice agent platforms let you set a primary language and a list of additional ones. The intuition is to set Spanish as primary and add Catalan alongside it. That does not work: Catalan is not accepted as an additional language. Either it is the agent's primary language, or it is not there.
This has a practical consequence that shapes the whole project. If you want your business to answer in Catalan, the agent has to be built in Catalan from day one, and Spanish and English become the secondary languages, each with its own voice configuration. This is not an aesthetic preference: it is the architecture of the agent.
Our agent is configured exactly that way: Catalan as the agent language, Spanish and English as variants. It answers in Catalan and stays in Catalan unless the caller speaks something else.
There is no Catalan voice to buy
The second obstacle is the voice itself. Commercial synthetic voice libraries hold dozens of Spanish, English and French voices. In Catalan, none. You can take a Spanish voice and have it read Catalan text: the result is what you would expect, a reading that mangles the voiced sibilants and never produces a neutral vowel.
The way out is to design the voice. The one we use was generated specifically to sound Catalan, listened to, rejected on the first attempt for sounding robotic, and redone. It is work that appears on no product comparison sheet, and it explains why most solutions on the market sound like a translation when you test them in Catalan.
Switching language mid-call
In Catalonia a real phone call is not monolingual. Someone rings, the agent answers in Catalan and the caller replies in Spanish. Or they start in Catalan and switch three sentences in. An agent that handles this badly does one of two equally poor things: it gets stuck in the language it started with, or it mixes both languages inside a single sentence.
Our agent's instructions are explicit here: answer in Catalan, adopt the caller's language from the greeting onwards, and once adopted do not switch until the caller switches. Never two languages inside one sentence. When in doubt, stay in Catalan.
Why this matters to a clinic
People calling a clinic outside the metropolitan area are often elderly, and often speak Catalan and nothing else. A front desk that defaults to Spanish is not neutral: it is a small, constant barrier, repeated every day. First contact shapes how people perceive a business, and that holds whether a person or a machine picks up.
There is a less sentimental argument too. An agent that mishears people takes down names, phone numbers and reasons for the visit badly, and then someone at the clinic has to call back to sort it out. Language quality is not courtesy: it is the difference between a request taken properly and one that creates work.

Where we are with this right now
The agent is configured and tested, and the first real deployment is at a Catalan dental clinic that has not fully gone live yet. We have no recordings of real calls to show you and no satisfaction metrics of our own: when we have them and the client authorises it, they will be published here.
What we can do today is a live demo so you hear it yourself and judge the accent, which is the only honest way to assess it.
Frequently asked questions
Can an AI answer the phone in Catalan?
Yes. That said, Catalan has to be the agent's primary language, because voice platforms do not accept it as an additional one, and the voice has to be custom-designed because commercial libraries contain none.
Can you tell it is a synthetic voice?
You can tell it is not a person, and in fact the agent says so in the first sentence of every call because EU law requires it. What we work to avoid is it sounding like a foreign voice reading Catalan.
What if the caller speaks Spanish?
The agent answers in Catalan and adopts the caller's language from the greeting. If they speak Spanish, it switches to Spanish and stays there; the same with English. It never mixes two languages in one sentence.
What if someone calls speaking none of the three?
The agent understands far more languages than it has configured as variants with their own voice. Delivery quality is best in Catalan, Spanish and English, which are the ones we have tuned.
Can I hear it before committing to anything?
Yes, and we recommend it. In a thirty-minute call you hear it working and judge with your ears rather than from a product sheet.
Hear it and judge for yourself
Thirty minutes: we let you hear the agent in Catalan and look at how many calls your business is losing.
